An overview of the festival featured by YourSingapore.com
The Singapore Arts Festival has evolved from a national arts activity in 1977 that celebrated the trailblazers in the local arts fraternity into an iconic, mainstay festival that has grown to be one of most cutting-edge of its kind in Asia. Themed differently each year, the Singapore Arts Festival displays works from both legendary and budding artists alike while bridging gaps in language, cultures and discipline – and now encompasses visuals arts, dance, theatre and music.
You will be spoilt for choice with the line-up provided by the curators of National Arts Council (NAC). Every year, the NAC comes up with an edgy, experimental and innovative line-up of performances that titillates the senses of artistic types everywhere – while remaining accessible to the uninitiated.
World-renowned acts such as theater director Robert Wilson and avant garde music composer Phillip Glass have performed in Singapore during the Arts Festival, alongside Singaporean greats such as theater director Goh Boon Teck. The festival’s core program alone will feature about 75 acts from various countries, with one or two world premieres to boot.
If you hanker for something radically different, the Singapore Arts Festival continues to push the artistic envelope with some of the most innovative and experimental performances in an array of artistic mediums. Look out also for the closing event, which is usually one of the most memorable in the Festival. (Source: Singapore Arts Festival)
