Christmas and New Year in Amsterdam are truly a season of celebrations, whether or not you celebrate the day itself in its traditional, religious sense.
On Christmas Eve, you can enjoy a free classical concert of Christmas classics in the Great Hall of this award-winning 19th-century venue. On Christmas Day, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will perform pieces by Beethoven and Mahler. And on December 26, visitors and locals can enjoy a Christmas recital from renowned Dutch concert pianist Regina Albrink.
If you want something a little less Xmas traditional than the typical Dutch holiday celebration, head over to the Westergasfabriek complex in the Westerpark neighborhood of Amsterdam. The Winterparade showcases theater, music, dance, film, cartoons and comedy wrapped in a special Christmas package. And all the while you can eat, drink and be very merry at the many nearby restaurants and bars. Winterparade’s last night promises to be quite the New Year’s Eve bash.
The Sunday Markets are fast becoming an institution in Amsterdam and they traditionally organize a special Christmas edition at the Westergasfabriek packed with cheerful decorations, delicious aromas and numerous craft stalls to create a happy Xmas holiday atmosphere.
On December 15th, young and old can enjoy spectacle, fairytales and magic during the Christmas Canal Parade. About 40 lounge and tour boats, ceremonial barges and flat boats, will sail across the Amsterdam canals, with enchanting illumination and abundant decorations. You’ll be all eyes and ears when the parade passes with cheerful theater, a squirting fountain, live music and a sailing carillon.

Most of visitors get to Amsterdam on Christmas holiday by plane. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (IATA code: AMS and ICAO code: EHAM) is one of the busiest airports in the world, situated 15 km south-west of the city. The national carrier for the Netherlands is KLM, now merged with Air France. With partner Delta Air Lines they offer worldwide connections. Remember to book your air ticket in advance to avoid any last moment problems.
