Introduction to Daegu

Daegu (formerly named Taegu)  is officially known as the Daegu Metropolitan City. This is the fourth largest city in South Korea after Seoul, Busan, and Incheon. The city is the third largest metropolitan area in the nation with over 2.5 million residents. The city is the capital and principal city of the surrounding Gyeongsangbuk-do province.

Every year, Gukchaebosang Memorial Park holds bell-hitting ceremony with Daegu citizen. If you don’t have any special plan, why don’t you come out to the park on New Year’s Eve and meet people and share the festive mood.

There will be other New Year events that you can participate! You can fly balloons with your wishes and watch various performances and fire works. Bring rubber balloons and wish papers by 9pm to the park, and you will be able to fill the helium gas on the spot. There will be fireworks at the end of the events.

On New Years’ Day you can go to a famous statue of the Buddha at a Buddhist temple named “Donghwa Sa”. The original parts of the temple have been there since something like 57BC. After making your way around the temples, you will come to a large statue of the Buddha, easily 8 stories tall and more. There’s a lot of carved stone sculptures in this part of Donghwa Sa.

Get to Daegu

You can easily get to Daegu by plane. Daegu Airport is very small. It has flight routes to Seoul, Jeju, China, Philippines and Thailand.
